Rough Colourless Zircon

Also known as Matura Diamond

Zircon is a zirconium silicate mineral with a tetrahedral crystal system and forma as prismatic crystals. Zircon crystals form in igneous rocks and some metamorphic rocks. Zircon is most famous for its colourless stones, which closely resemble diamonds in their fire and brilliancy and have been used both intentionally and mistakenly in their place. Although colourless the name Zircon comes from the Arabic zargun, which derives from the Persian for ‘gold colour.

Variety of Coloured Zircon

Zircon has been known since antiquity, and has been mined for over 2000 years from the gem gravels of Sri Lanka, and was worn as a gemstone in Greece and Italy as far back as the 6th century.  Although colourless, Zircons with impurities are heat treated to change their colour. Today Zircons can be blue, brown, green, red and yellow.

Zircon is also useful because it has a high melting point and is therefore used to make foundry sand, heat-resistant minerals, and ceramics. Because of its hardness, zircon is also used to make industrial abrasives. Zircons are also key indicators in radiometric dating as they have the ability to survive through all forms of geological process.
