Amethyst is a member of the Quartz family with a trigonal system. Its colour, which varies from pale to deep purple, is derived from the combination of trace amounts of iron and aluminium, plus natural or applied irradiation.
Amethyst has been prized for its beauty and its legendary energies for thousands of years. Neolithic people in Europe used it as early as 25,000 B.C. and in Ancient Egypt it was into beads and amulets.
Greek and Roman societies placed high value on Amethyst, and it has long been viewed as the stone of royalty, utilised in crowns, sceptres and the rings of bishops. Amethyst’s name came from a Greek word ‘methustos’ meaning ‘not drunken’ and as such the Greeks believed Amethyst would prevent intoxication, calm anger and relieve sexual frustration!!!
Amethyst was worn by the first Christians and later bishops. It is said to promote happiness, love, healing, peace, courage, intelligence, justice, peaceful sleep, pleasant dreams and even successful business dealings! It is also believed to enhance spiritual awareness and relieve stress. Amethyst is extremely beneficial to the mind, calming or stimulating.
Mentally, it helps you feel less scattered, more focused and in control of your faculties. It is said that Amethyst enhances memory and improves motivation, making you more able to set goals. Amethyst is reputed to treat insomnia and brings restful sleep. When worn or carried, it is supposed to focus the mind, bring clarity and aid studying.
Especially beneficial for travellers, it protects the wearer from robbery, danger and illness!!! Amethyst is the stone of St Valentine and when given by sweetheart to sweetheart it is reputed to strengthen their bond! Wear as a locket to call back lost love!!
Lapis Lazuli is a sodium aluminium silicate with sulphur, chlorine and hydroxyl, and variable inclusions of Pyrite and White Calcite with an isometric crystal system.
The ancient Greeks and Romans called the stone sapphirus, until the term Lapis Lazuli began to be used in the Middle Ages. In Latin the name means ‘blue stone’ and this came from the ancient Persian word lazhuward, which meant ‘blue’.
Lapis was amongst the first gemstones to be used as jewellery by the ancient Egyptians as far back as 3100 BC. It was also ground to a powder for use as medicine and as a cosmetic for eye shadow. Lapis was considered the stone of royalty at least 2,500 years ago as it was worn in the belief that it will protect the wearer from evil.
The mystical powers of Lapis are reputed to be many and varied, among which is the belief that wearing the stone influences and promotes psychic awareness by subduing the conscious mind. Lapis Lazuli is a stone of truth, encouraging truth in the spoken and written word and honesty in the spirit.
Lapis is said to help relieve depression, promote gentleness, gives courage to the fearful, dispels fantasies, protects children, confers peace and ensures fidelity between lovers. Wear it for all forms of deep communication, for example when you have a heart-to-heart with a loved one.
Lapis is reputed to be a stone of friendship and can bring about harmony in any relationship and make it long lasting.
Lapis is also considered to be helpful in the treatment of migraines, fevers, respiratory problems, insomnia and depression.
