Garnet is a gemstone most commonly known as red, but is in fact found in a variety of colours. Different types of Garnet have chemical formulas and spiritual properties. Most are varieties of aluminium silicates with either isometric, rhombic, dodecahedron and/or icositetrahedron crystal systems. Some types of Garnets have been known and used for thousands of years, while others, like Tsvarovite and Grossularite, were only discovered a few decades ago.
The word Garnet is derived from the Latin word ‘granatum’, which meant ‘pomegranate’, as it looked like a pomegranate seed. Garnets were used in the former Czechoslovakia as far back as the Bronze Age, and in Egypt more than five thousand years ago.
Garnet is a powerfully energizing and regenerating stone. It revitalizes, purifies, and balances energy, bringing serenity or passion as appropriate. Garnet inspires love, devotion and commitment. It balances the sex drive and alleviates emotional disharmony. Garnet is a useful crystal to have in a crisis. It fortifies, activates, and strengthens the survival instinct, bringing courage and hope into seemingly hopeless situations. Garnet is said to enhance truth, faith and consistency, and to dispel melancholy.
Psychologically, Garnets sharpen your perceptions of yourself and other people. It is said to help dissolve ingrained behaviour patterns that no longer serve you and help to let goof useless or old or obsolete ideas.
